Radio by city

Nigerian radio is concentrated. Lagos alone accounts for a big share of the country's stations, and Ibadan and Abuja together carry most of what is left. The other cities on this page each have their own sound - Hausa broadcasting in Kano, Igbo in Owerri, Niger Delta talk in Port Harcourt.

Pick a city below. Every station on that page broadcasts from within the city itself, not just somewhere in the state.

The big three

Lagos, Ibadan, Abuja
L
Lagos 50 stations

Lagos is the biggest radio market in Nigeria, and by a wide margin. English-language pop, Yoruba talk, sports, gospel and urban music all broadcast from the same city, and the competition between stations is what gives Lagos radio its edge.

I
Ibadan 35 stations

Ibadan has the deepest radio history in Nigeria. The first television station in Africa broadcast from here, and the city has been a radio hub since the 1950s. Its stations still carry a strong Yoruba voice, with talk, culture and music in roughly equal measure.

A
Abuja 21 stations

Abuja is younger than the other radio cities but it has become a serious market. National networks, political talk, and English-language entertainment all concentrate here because the capital is where policy, business and diplomacy meet.

Why only ten cities?

Nigeria has hundreds of cities and towns, and radio exists far beyond the ones listed here. But most of those stations sit inside bigger state-level markets, and a city page with two broadcasters is not useful to anyone. We build a city page only when there are enough stations to make it worth visiting.

If you are looking for a station in a city not listed here, try the state page instead. Those cover every station in each state regardless of city size.

Questions we hear a lot

Which Nigerian city has the most radio stations?
Lagos, by a wide margin. It is the biggest media market in the country and hosts more stations than any other city on this list. Ibadan is second, with roughly two-thirds as many.
Why does this page only list 10 cities?
Because those 10 are where the stations actually are. Nigerian radio is heavily concentrated in a handful of urban markets. We only build a city page when there are enough stations to make it useful - a city with one or two broadcasters is better served by its state page.
Can I listen to these city stations from outside Nigeria?
Yes. Every stream plays worldwide. Diaspora listeners in the UK, US, Canada and elsewhere use these city pages to stay close to home.
How is a city page different from a state page?
A city page lists only stations that broadcast from that specific city. A state page lists every station in the state, which is a bigger list. If you want radio from a specific city, use the city page. If you want the whole region, use the state page.
